Hyderabad, April 30 (Maxim News): Doctors at Osmania General Hospital achieved a major medical milestone after they performed a rare liver transplant on an 18 month old child. The infant suffered from Glycogen Storage Disease, a complex metabolic disorder.
The child weighed only 10 kilograms, which made the surgery highly risky. However, the medical team carried out the transplant successfully after a 14 hour long procedure. The child’s father donated a portion of his liver to save the infant’s life.
Doctors said the case posed multiple challenges due to the child’s young age and low body weight. In addition, Glycogen Storage Disease increased surgical complexity. Despite these factors, the team completed the operation with precision and coordination.
Importantly, the entire treatment took place under the Aarogyasri scheme. Therefore, the family received advanced medical care without any financial burden. Hospital officials said such procedures rarely occur in government hospitals, which makes this case significant.
Advanced healthcare services expand in public sector
Meanwhile, doctors confirmed that the child remains stable and is recovering well. They continue to monitor the patient closely to ensure full recovery. Furthermore, the hospital team highlighted the growing capabilities in public healthcare institutions.
Health Minister Damodar Raja Narasimha praised the doctors for their dedication and skill. He stated that the successful transplant reflects the government’s focus on strengthening tertiary healthcare services. Moreover, he emphasized that such achievements improve public trust in government hospitals.
Officials added that investments in infrastructure and skilled manpower have improved outcomes in critical care. As a result, more complex procedures now take place in state run hospitals. This development marks a step forward in accessible and quality healthcare.
The successful transplant stands as a landmark achievement for Osmania General Hospital. It also highlights the potential of public healthcare systems to handle advanced medical cases with expertise. (Maxim News)
