New Delhi, August 22: Around 300 people from several states protested against reservation policies at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on Friday.
The protesters gathered under the banner of the “Reservation Hatao Andolan” and demanded changes to the reservation system.
Participants came from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka and Rajasthan. Some demanded the complete removal of reservations.
Others called for reservations to be based on economic conditions rather than caste.
Reservation Protests Draw Police Security In Delhi
The protest was organised with support from an Instagram page that has around 5.4 million followers.
The page had urged people on August 21 to join the campaign against reservations.
Meanwhile, Delhi Police increased security around Jantar Mantar during the protest.
The organisers had initially received permission to hold the programme at Ramlila Maidan until 4 pm.
However, protesters objected after the venue was changed to Jantar Mantar.
Abhishek Agnihotri, who led the protest, said participants would continue their demonstration peacefully.
Pratyush Gaur, a participant from Bihar, opposed the existing reservation system.
He claimed reservations were affecting general category candidates who secured higher marks.
He also criticised governments for responding to public concerns only after protests.
The protesters said they wanted the government to review the existing reservation framework.
