Revanth Govt Misleading BCs Again with 42% Quota Ordinance: Dr. K. Laxman
Delhi/Hyderabad, July 12 (Maxim News): Senior BJP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Dr. K. Laxman has accused Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy of betraying the Backward Classes (BCs) once again by issuing what he called a “politically motivated” ordinance for 42% reservations in local body elections.
Addressing the media in New Delhi on Friday, Laxman criticized the Congress-led state government for bypassing constitutional procedures. He questioned the necessity of passing an ordinance when a reservation bill was already pending with the President of India for approval.
“The state has the power to implement BC reservations in local bodies. But to ensure it holds up legally, there must be a caste-wise population enumeration. Why hasn’t the Revanth Reddy government released those statistics?” he asked.
Laxman Questions Credibility of Burra Venkatesham Commission
The BJP MP raised serious doubts over the functioning of the BC Commission led by Burra Venkatesham, alleging that the panel failed to deliver credible data on caste populations—data crucial to sustain the reservation policy in court.
He urged the Telangana government to immediately release caste-wise statistics, asserting that only empirical data can justify such a large quota under constitutional scrutiny.
“In 2021, the Supreme Court clearly ruled in the Vikas Kishan Rao vs Maharashtra case that overall reservations in local bodies cannot exceed 50%. How then is the Telangana government proposing 42% for BCs, on top of SC and ST quotas?” Laxman questioned.
Congress Accused of Electoral Gimmickry
Dr. Laxman accused the Revanth Reddy government of trying to mislead BC voters ahead of local body elections, drawing parallels with how BRS and YSRCP allegedly used quota politics in the past without delivering real empowerment.
He also pointed to the Kamareddy Declaration, a key Congress poll promise, questioning why it has not been discussed in any Assembly session so far. He alleged that the High Court’s order to finalize BC reservations by September may have pushed the state government to rush through the ordinance to hold early elections under a politically favorable narrative.
“What common sense is this? An ordinance when a bill is pending with the President? The Congress government seems more interested in headlines than in real justice for BCs,” Laxman said.
BJP Doubts Governor’s Approval
Dr. Laxman also questioned how the Governor could be expected to approve an ordinance when a similar bill is already awaiting Presidential assent. He called the move “legally flawed and politically deceptive.”
He concluded by accusing the Congress of weaponizing BCs for electoral gains instead of genuinely working for their welfare.
