- BJP fields Suvendu Adhikari against Mamata Banerjee
- Bhawanipur voters deletion sparks political battle
Hyderabad: The Bhawanipur election has drawn sharp political attention as the Bharatiya Janata Party fielded Suvendu Adhikari against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The move places the BJP leader directly in Mamata Banerjee’s stronghold, turning the contest into a high stakes battle.
The BJP announced its first list of candidates just a day after the Election Commission declared the poll schedule. Meanwhile, Suvendu Adhikari, seen as a key face of the party in West Bengal, will also contest from Nandigram. This is significant because he had defeated Mamata Banerjee there in 2021.
Bhawanipur Election and Voter Deletion Issue
The Bhawanipur election also comes amid controversy over electoral roll revisions. The Special Intensive Revision led to the deletion of 47,294 voters from the constituency. Earlier, Bhawanipur had 2,06,295 voters before the process began.
In addition, 14,154 voters have been placed under the “under adjudication” category. These developments have raised questions and triggered strong reactions from political leaders. Therefore, the voter deletion issue has become central to the Bhawanipur election narrative.
Political Reactions on Bhawanipur Election Battle
Mamata Banerjee has alleged that a conspiracy involving the Election Commission and the BJP caused the deletion of voters. However, she expressed confidence in her chances. She said she would win from Bhawanipur again, even if by a margin of one vote.
On the other hand, Suvendu Adhikari rejected these claims. He said the removal of fake voters and illegal immigrants has weakened Mamata Banerjee’s chances. He asserted that she now has no chance to win in Bhawanipur.
Meanwhile, the ruling Trinamool Congress has not yet released its candidate list. However, Mamata Banerjee is likely to contest from Bhawanipur again. She may also choose to contest from another constituency in the state.
Thus, the Bhawanipur election is shaping into a direct and intense political contest. The focus remains on voter roll changes, candidate strategies, and competing claims from both sides.
