In the aftermath of the tragic Kurnool bus accident that claimed 20 lives, Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar announced that the Telangana government has ordered a thorough investigation into the incident.
Speaking on behalf of Chief Minister Revanth Reddy’s government, the Minister confirmed that an inquiry has been initiated into how the private travels bus departed from Hyderabad and later met with the devastating accident in Andhra Pradesh’s Kurnool district. He assured that all necessary relief measures will be extended to the victims and their families.
Ponnam Prabhakar said that the inquiry aims to identify operational negligence and ensure accountability. He stated that measures will be taken to regulate private travel buses, particularly focusing on overspeeding and vehicle safety standards.
“A meeting of the ministers of Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka will be held soon in the wake of the accident. Decisions will be taken on safety measures in buses,” he said. He further added that a special committee would be formed to monitor private travels and prevent unhealthy competition within the sector that puts passenger safety at risk.
Disturbing details have emerged from the probe into the Kurnool incident. The private Kaveri Travels bus, which was en route from Hyderabad to Bengaluru, caught fire at Chinnatekur in Kallur mandal after colliding with a bike at about 2:40 a.m. on Friday.
Reports indicate that the bike got trapped under the front engine of the bus, leading to a spark and then a massive fire that engulfed the vehicle within seconds. Tragically, the driver and co-driver fled the spot, abandoning passengers trapped inside.
The accident, which has shocked both Telugu states, prompted swift action from Telangana officials. The state government has promised financial assistance to affected families once complete details are received. The focus now shifts to ensuring strict enforcement of transport regulations to avert similar tragedies in the future.
