Hyderabad, June 16 (Maxim News): Students of the Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge and Technologies (RGUKT)-Basara continued their protest on the third consecutive day on Thursday, demanding the immediate resolve of their problems.
Students boycotted classes and staged a sit-in at the second gate on the campus, asking the government to address their 12 demands.
The agitating students mainly demand that appointment of full-fledged vice-chancellor, fill up vacancies, laptops/desktops and projectors in all classrooms, provide all facilities like uniforms shoes, beds in hostel rooms, revival of PUC blocks and hostel provide Internet, electricity, and plumbing, immediate repair to fans damaged in classrooms and provide PED and PET posts.
Since early in the morning, police erected barricades in front of the academic block and other parts of the institution, preventing the students from staging sit-in. Police also imposed restrictions on movement of civilians on the campus and pressmen reporting the incident. They were not permitted to reach the spot of the agitation and to interact with the students.
The agitating students expressed dissatisfaction over Education Minister Sabita Indra Reddy’s remarks against the protest. They found fault with her for terming their problems as silly.
“It is very unfair making derogatory remarks against students by sitting in Hyderabad. The Education Minister should come to the campus and should get to know the real problems being faced by students. Moreover, the attitude of district collector, Musharraf Ali Farooqui, is also not fair. He has summoned students for the discussion and threatened us to face severe consequences,” an agitating student alleged.
Family members of the students who extended their solidarity to the protest were arrested. They were housed at Basar police station. Scores of families arrived at the gate to take part in the agitation. They were not allowed to enter the premises of the varsity by policemen who were present at the spot. They demanded the government to take steps to address problems of the wards.
Meanwhile, Education Minister Sabitha Indra Reddy appealed to the agitating students to call off their stir and assured that the State government is ready to adress all their concerns.
On the other hand, the State government has appointed Prof. Satish Kumar as new director of the RGUKT and issued orders in this regard. (Maxim News)
