Row Over SP Leader Abu Azmi’s Warning On Delhi Blast Probe
- Abu Azmi warns against wrongful arrests in Delhi blasts investigation
- BJP hits out at SP leader for remarks comparing Delhi and Mumbai cases
A political storm erupted on Wednesday after Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Abu Azmi’s comments on the Delhi blasts probe drew strong reactions from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Azmi accused the government of attempting to cover up its failure by making wrongful arrests while calling for harsh punishment for the real culprits.
Speaking to reporters, the SP leader compared the ongoing Delhi blasts case to the 2006 Mumbai train blasts, alleging that similar investigative lapses were evident. He said the government should ensure that only the guilty face justice. “Putting anyone behind bars on suspicion is a great injustice to the innocent people and this shows inefficiency and ineptitude of the officials,” Azmi told journalists.
He demanded swift justice for victims of the Delhi blasts. “They should be prosecuted and sent to gallows within six months but the innocent should not be arrested,” Azmi said. Citing the 2006 Mumbai train blasts that killed 187 people, he pointed out that there had been zero convictions despite years of imprisonment for several suspects later found not guilty. He warned against repeating similar mistakes in the Delhi blasts probe.
BJP leaders hit back strongly at Azmi’s comments. Party spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari accused the SP leader of siding with the accused linked to the Delhi case, including Umar, Muzammil, and Shaheen. “This is the same Samajwadi Party that once moved to withdraw cases against terrorists,” Bhandari said, claiming that the political “ecosystem” would soon rise to defend Azmi’s remarks.
Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah has directed investigative agencies to “hunt down” those behind the Delhi blasts. BJP leader Rajeev Chandrashekhar went further, alleging that such statements by opposition leaders embolden extremist forces. He said some political groups repeatedly choose to pander to radical elements even after acts of terror, hurting the fight against extremism.
As the political debate deepens, both parties continue to hold their ground over how India’s terror investigations should balance justice, speed, and accountability.
