Hyderabad, Oct. 27: Congress leader Mohammed Waliullah Sameer has accused AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi of diverting Muslim voters from Rahul Gandhi’s nationwide campaign against alleged “vote chori” by shifting the political debate towards Muslim leadership in Uttar Pradesh.
Sameer Waliullah, the Congress in-charge for the Hyderabad Lok Sabha constituency and former District Congress Committee president, made the remarks on Tuesday, October 27. He was responding to Owaisi’s recent speeches in Azamgarh and Rampur, where the AIMIM chief reportedly urged Muslims to develop independent political leadership rather than depend on Gandhi-Nehru or Yadav leaders.
Sameer Waliullah Questions Owaisi’s Vote Katwa Politics
Sameer Waliullah argued that protecting eligible citizens’ voting rights should be the immediate priority, particularly amid allegations of irregularities in electoral rolls. He said the debate over political leadership should not overshadow concerns about voter registration and alleged wrongful removal of names.
The Congress leader also cited AIMIM’s performance in the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, arguing that the party’s vote share in several constituencies raised questions about its impact on closely contested results.

He pointed to Nakur, where the BJP won by 155 votes while AIMIM secured 3,591 votes; Kursi, where the victory margin was 520 against AIMIM’s 8,541 votes; and Bijnor, where the BJP won by 1,445 votes while AIMIM received 2,290 votes.
He also cited Sultanpur, where the BJP’s victory margin was 1,388 votes against AIMIM’s 5,251 votes, and Aurai, where the margin was 1,647 votes compared with AIMIM’s 2,190 votes.

Sameer Waliullah acknowledged that it would be incorrect to assume all AIMIM voters would otherwise have supported the Samajwadi Party or another Opposition party. However, he maintained that AIMIM’s electoral impact in closely fought constituencies deserved public scrutiny ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.
He said greater Muslim political representation was important but warned against political isolation and the division of Opposition votes. He also questioned AIMIM’s organisational structure in Telangana and alleged inconsistencies in the party’s messaging on vote consolidation in Hyderabad and other states.
Sameer Waliullah urged Owaisi to clarify whether his Uttar Pradesh campaign was primarily aimed at defeating the BJP or expanding AIMIM’s political influence at the expense of other Opposition parties. His remarks reflect the Congress leader’s political assessment, while the impact of AIMIM’s votes on individual election outcomes cannot be established solely by comparing vote totals with victory margins.
