Sarpanch Elections Likely in June: Revanth Reddy Signals Green Light
Hyderabad, March 30 (Maxim News): The Telangana government is preparing to hold local body elections in June, as Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has directed officials to expedite the process. Reports suggest that a 42% reservation for Backward Classes (BCs) will be implemented in these elections.
Deadline Set for Election Preparations
The state government has set a 45-day deadline starting from April 1 to complete all arrangements for the elections, which have already been delayed for over a year. The reservation bill for BCs in education and jobs has already been passed in the Legislative Assembly and Council, and efforts are underway to push for its inclusion in the 9th Schedule of the Constitution.
To achieve this, the government is planning a 45-day campaign in Delhi, involving all political parties, BC organizations, and public representatives, to pressure the Central government for approval.
Legal and Political Strategy on BC Reservations
If the Centre responds positively, the state government will proceed accordingly. Otherwise, the government is prepared to:
- Approach the courts to seek legal backing for the 42% BC reservation.
- If legal action is unsuccessful, the Congress party may still allocate over 42% of seats to BC candidates and proceed with the elections.
- Seek President Droupadi Murmu’s intervention and urge for the bills to be passed at the central level.
Efforts to Secure Central Approval
Since increasing BC reservations falls under Central jurisdiction, the Telangana government is looking to ally with Tamil Nadu and other states that support reservation policies. CM Revanth Reddy, along with ministers, MPs, MLAs, and allied party leaders, plans to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and key central ministers to push for the inclusion of BC reservation bills in Schedule 9 of the Constitution.
Pending Funds and Political Implications
Due to the delay in elections, the 15th Finance Commission funds from the Centre—amounting to over ₹1,500 crore—have been withheld. This has stalled development projects in Panchayats and municipalities, leading to criticism of the government. Pressure is also mounting from Congress leaders, MLAs, and ministers, as many aspirants are awaiting elections for Sarpanch, MPTC, ZPTC, and MPP positions.
Revanth Reddy believes that winning local body elections will help the Congress Party strengthen its grip in villages, ultimately boosting its position in state politics.
Final Plan: Two Possible Approaches
If the Centre does not approve the BC reservation increase, the Revanth government is prepared to:
- Unilaterally implement 42% BC reservations in local bodies and move forward with elections.
- Fighting legal battles in court if objections arise, including approaching the Supreme Court if necessary.
Despite potential legal hurdles, the state government is determined to ensure a 42% reservation for BCs before the elections. (Maxim News)
