Saudi’s Crown Prince MBS Likely to Attend Queen’s Funeral, Human Rights Activists Protest
Mohammed bin Salman (MBS), the de facto ruler of Saudi Arabia and the country’s crown prince, has been invited to the State Funeral of Queen Elizabeth on Monday. But because human rights activists have denounced the condolence offer, Salman’s impending visit has stirred great controversy in the UK.
The invitation sent to Crown Prince MBS has been dubbed a “stain” on the memory of the king by Hatice Cengiz, the fiancée of the murdered Saudi writer Jamal Khashoggi, and other human rights advocates. They have said that the visit is an effort by the Saudi crown prince to “seek legitimacy and normalization” through the period of mourning.
It is important to note here. Jamal Khashoggi, a Saudi journalist, was murdered inside the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul in 2018. A declassified CIA dossier claims that MBS gave the go-ahead for the journalist’s assassination and dismemberment. The Saudi Crown Prince and his administration, however, have refuted this accusation.
Although it remained unknown if Crown Prince Salman will attend the funeral on Monday, he is anticipated to arrive in London on Sunday.
