Security Forces Should Exercise Restraint: Supreme Court On Gen-G Protest

Delhi/Hyderabad, Aug 5 (Maxim News): The Supreme Court has recently made key comments on the tensions during the ‘Sansad Chalo’ march. It has made it clear that the police and security forces should exercise restraint during protests. It has been said that even if the youth throw stones, they should not act harshly.

The Supreme Court has said that it is the responsibility of governments to provide counseling and bring peace. The court made these comments during the hearing of a petition filed on July 20 seeking action against the organizers of the ‘Sansad Chalo’ march who incited violence. The petitioners, presenting their arguments, warned that if action is not taken against those who crossed the line during the protest, it will be dangerous and will set the stage for a trend.

However, the Supreme Court commented that ‘listening’ to the protesters’ problem is a powerful weapon. The CJI bench also warned that if the government shows aggression, social violence will increase. CJI Justice Suryakant said that even if misguided mobs pelt stones, priority should be given to pacifying the youth. He warned that a harsh response from the government would further inflame the flames in the society. However, the bench also opined that only the police have the experience and understanding to control such situations.

The Supreme Court also suggested that peaceful protests should be encouraged and the situation should not get out of hand. It tagged the petitioners’ case with other petitions related to these protests.(Maxim News)
