As the city’s population and vehicle numbers continue to increase, busy junctions and main roads have become increasingly dangerous for pedestrians. The decision aims to improve public convenience while reducing the risk of road accidents in high-traffic areas.

Officials said the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) has been directed to prepare detailed plans for the projects at the earliest.

The six new skywalks will come up at Afzalgunj, Madina, Lakdikapul petrol pump, BHEL, JNTU, and Miyapur T-junction. These spots are among the city’s most crowded and accident-prone zones, where both commuters and pedestrians often face challenges crossing roads safely.

According to HMDA officials, these skywalks will not only help pedestrians move safely across busy roads but also ease traffic congestion by reducing the need for frequent traffic interruptions. The upcoming structures are expected to enhance overall traffic flow and support better connectivity between key areas of the city.

The authorities cited the success of the existing Uppal skywalk as a positive example. It has been open to the public and has already shown visible improvements in crowd movement and traffic regulation.

Meanwhile, the Mehdipatnam skywalk project is progressing rapidly, and a major interchange skywalk in Secunderabad is under construction. Once completed, it will link the railway station, metro station, and bus stand, creating a seamless transit experience for thousands of daily commuters.

A recent survey by LEE Associates highlighted that at least 23 locations across Hyderabad urgently need similar infrastructure to ensure smooth and safe movement for pedestrians. The government’s current decision marks a step toward creating a more walkable, commuter-friendly city and reflects the administration’s focus on sustainable urban infrastructure.
