Hyderabad: The issue of a possible social media ban for children under the age of 13 came up during the Andhra Pradesh Assembly session on Friday. Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu addressed the matter while speaking in the Assembly during a discussion on the Finance Bill.
Naidu said the government is committed to protecting children from the harmful effects of social media. He stressed that technology can bring great benefits if used properly. However, he warned that misuse of technology can also cause serious harm.
He said, “if technology is used for personal gain, it can create miracles, but if it is used for evil, it will lead to destruction.” Therefore, he noted that there has been a suggestion to restrict social media access for children below 13 years of age.
Meanwhile, the Chief Minister said the government plans to launch a programme within 90 days to make social media inaccessible to children under 13. He added that the government will hold discussions before taking a final decision regarding teenagers between the ages of 13 and 16.
Naidu also used the opportunity to criticise the previous administration. He alleged that during the YSRCP regime, government assets were mortgaged and large debts were taken, which placed a burden on the people.
However, he said the current government continues welfare schemes despite financial challenges in the state. According to him, the administration remains focused on completing major projects and ensuring development.
The Chief Minister also spoke about the Polavaram project during the Assembly discussion. He said the government plans to complete the project and dedicate it to the nation by next year.
The remarks were made as the Assembly continued discussions on financial matters and government policies during the ongoing session. The proposal regarding social media restrictions for young users will be considered after further consultations.
