Speaker Verdict On MLA Defections Anti Democratic: Kishan Reddy
Hyderabad, Dec 18 (Maxim News): Union Minister G Kishan Reddy on Tuesday termed the Speaker decision on BRS MLAs who joined the Congress as unfortunate and against democratic principles.
Reddy said the verdict has hurt public faith in constitutional processes and raised serious questions on the enforcement of the anti defection law.
Speaking to media persons in New Delhi, Kishan Reddy said there was clear evidence that at least ten MLAs elected on the BRS symbol had joined the Congress.
However, he expressed shock that the Speaker ruled they had not defected. He described the decision as deeply disappointing and damaging to legislative ethics.
Kishan Reddy alleged that both the Congress and BRS parties showed no respect for the Constitution or established laws.
Reddy said earlier the BRS weakened the anti defection law, and now the Congress is following the same path. Therefore, he accused both parties of protecting political defections for convenience.
The Union Minister said the Speaker must act strictly according to constitutional provisions and legal norms.
Kishan Reddy demanded that the Speaker take a lawful decision without political pressure. According to him, the credibility of the Assembly depends on transparent and fair enforcement of the anti defection law.
Kishan Reddy also targeted Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. He said if Rahul Gandhi truly respected the Constitution, he should demand disqualification of the MLAs who switched parties. He added that selective interpretation of constitutional values weakens democracy and sets a dangerous precedent.
He further stated that frequent defections erode voter trust. Voters, he said, elect representatives based on party symbols and manifestos. When elected MLAs change parties, it amounts to betrayal of the public mandate.
The Union Minister reiterated that democratic institutions survive only when rules are applied uniformly. He warned that ignoring defections would encourage political instability. He urged constitutional authorities to act decisively to uphold the rule of law and protect democratic values. (Maxim News)
