New Delhi, June 13: The rollout of satellite internet services by Starlink in India may take longer as the Centre is reviewing security clearances required before commercial operations begin.
According to reports, the Union government has paused the final approval process while examining national security, regulatory oversight and compliance requirements related to satellite communication services.
Officials are reviewing whether satellite internet operations can fully align with India’s requirements on national security, sovereignty and lawful oversight mechanisms.
The review reportedly gained attention following concerns raised in the context of reports about the use of Starlink terminals in conflict affected regions. Authorities are examining whether regulatory controls would remain effective even under changing international conditions.
A spokesperson for Starlink denied reports linking the company to disputes connected to recent geopolitical developments. The company stated that it has developed a deployment framework tailored for India and remains committed to meeting Indian security requirements.
The approval process for pricing and allocation mechanisms related to satellite spectrum is also reported to be awaiting progress alongside pending clearances.
Although Starlink had earlier secured the required Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite service licence process, commercial services are yet to begin.
Industry observers believe consumers and telecom stakeholders waiting for satellite internet services in India may have to wait longer until the regulatory and security review process is completed.
