Organised by the Telangana Iron & Steel Manufacturers Association (TISMA) under the umbrella of the AIIFA Sustainable Steel Manufacturers Association, and supported by the Ministry of Steel and UNDP, the roadshow emphasized sustainable growth, technological innovation, and policy alignment for the steel industry—especially the often-overlooked secondary steel sector.

Secondary Steel Sector: Backbone of Affordable Housing and Jobs

Speakers unanimously highlighted the critical role of the secondary steel sector, which contributes 65% of India’s steel bar production, primarily via induction furnaces. This sector not only provides millions of jobs but also supports MSMEs, promotes domestic scrap utilization, and enables affordable housing for middle-class families.

“The secondary steel industry plays a pivotal role in India’s inclusive growth. Affordable steel makes the dream of owning a home a reality for millions,” said Anil Agarwal, steel industry veteran and former FTCCI President.

BIS Draft Standards: Call for Context-Sensitive Reforms

One of the major concerns raised during the event was the BIS Draft Standard for steel bars (IS 1786). Prakash Goenka, Project Chairman of the Steel Mahakumbh, called on the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) to align regulations with India’s unique environmental and material conditions, including tropical climates, coastal zones, and the use of high-phosphorus iron ore.

“Thanks to AIIFA’s proactive efforts, the proposed draft has been paused. But we urge BIS to ensure the standards are practical and region-specific,” Goenka said.

Mr. PV Srikanth, Director & Head, BIS Hyderabad, provided updates on the standard revisions and assured stakeholders of continued dialogue.

“To meet this ambitious vision, India needs a resilient and energy-efficient steel ecosystem rooted in local innovation,” said Yogesh Mandhani, President, AIIFA.

Green Steel and Inclusive Growth: The Way Forward
