April 1: Union Minister Prakash Javadekar announced on Thursday that Superstar Rajnikanth would be honoured with 51st Dadasaheb Phalke Award this year. Speaking to the media, he said that jury comprising actors Mohanlal and Biswajeet, singers Asha Bhosle and Shankar Mahadevan, and director Subhash Ghai have recommended the name of Rajinikanth for the prestigious and the highest award in Indian cinema.
Javadekar has praised Rajinikanth for winning the hearts of people with his acting for the last 50 years. In 1975, he made his debut with Tamil film Apoorva Ragangal directed by K Balachander.
