New Delhi, July 31: The Supreme Court has granted a divorce to Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and his wife Payal Abdullah after both parties informed the court that they had amicably resolved all their disputes.
A Bench comprising Justice P.S. Narasimha and Justice Alok Aradhe passed the order after senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Omar Abdullah, informed the court that all pending issues between the couple had been settled and related proceedings had been withdrawn.
Supreme Court Grants Divorce to Omar Abdullah
Omar Abdullah and Payal Abdullah married in 1994 but had been living separately for several years. Omar had earlier sought divorce, stating that the marriage had irretrievably broken down.
His plea was rejected by the family court in 2016. The Delhi High Court later upheld that decision, observing that the allegations of mental cruelty were not sufficiently established.
The matter eventually reached the Supreme Court. During earlier hearings, the apex court had encouraged both parties to explore the possibility of resolving their differences through mediation.
After the couple informed the court that they had reached an amicable settlement, the Supreme Court accepted the submission and granted the divorce.
