Supreme Court Refuses To Stay Darshan Thoogudeepa’s Bail In Renukaswamy Murder Case

The Supreme Court of India has rejected the Karnataka State Government’s attempt to challenge the bail granted to Kannada actor Darshan Thoogudeepa and his co-accused in the Renukaswamy murder case. On January 24, 2025, the Supreme Court upheld the Karnataka High Court’s decision to grant bail, stating that it would not cancel the bail order but would consider the state’s appeal.

Supreme Court’s Decision

The case was heard by a bench led by Justice J.B. Pardiwala, who decided that it would be inappropriate to cancel the bail at this stage. The court clarified that while it would review the state government’s appeal, it would not impose a stay on the bail. A notice was issued to Darshan and the other accused, including Pavithra Gowda, involved in the case.

The Karnataka government, represented by senior advocate Siddharth Luthra, argued that the High Court had been too lenient in its decision. They claimed that allowing the bail could set a dangerous precedent for other accused individuals in similar cases. However, the Supreme Court responded by stating that if other co-accused apply for bail in the future, their requests should be considered separately and based on their own merits, without relying on the current bail order.

The Murder Case Background

Darshan Thoogudeepa was arrested on June 11, 2024, following the murder of 33-year-old Renukaswamy. The incident reportedly stemmed from derogatory comments made by Renukaswamy about Pavithra Gowda, who was allegedly in a relationship with Darshan.

The comments were said to have referred to Pavithra’s supposed role in ruining Darshan’s marriage. This led to a violent confrontation, and Renukaswamy’s body was found shortly after the attack.

As the legal process continues, Darshan and his co-accused remain out on bail while the Supreme Court reviews the appeal by the Karnataka government.
