New Delhi, August 11: The Supreme Court has directed a special Delhi court to conclude within one year the trial in a UAPA case linked to alleged ISIS radicalisation activities.
A bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant passed the order on Tuesday. Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana were also part of the bench.
The court was hearing a plea by Md Hidayatullah, who challenged a Delhi High Court order refusing him bail.
The National Investigation Agency arrested Hidayatullah in October 2022. The prosecution alleges that he spread ISIS ideology through cyberspace.
SC Sets Six Month Deadline For Key Witnesses
Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati told the court that charges had been framed against eight accused.
She said the case involves 12 accused. Four are absconding, while eight have been charge sheeted.
The prosecution has also listed 14 protected witnesses in the case. The Supreme Court directed the special court to examine the vital protected witnesses within six months.
The bench also allowed the special court to conduct hearings on a day to day basis if necessary.
The High Court had earlier rejected Hidayatullah’s bail plea. The case involves alleged offences under the Indian Penal Code and the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act.
The prosecution has alleged that Hidayatullah promoted ISIS ideology online and spread hatred against the government.
It also alleged that he transferred money from his bank account for ISIS related activities.
