Surat Municipal Corporation Earns Rs. 140 Crore By Selling Sewage Water
Surat/Hyderabad, Sept 14 (Maxim News): Most of our cities discharge their sewage into the sea or rivers. Instead, the Surat Municipal Corporation in Gujarat came up with the idea of treating and selling that water! What’s more, it has built huge treatment plants all over the city and is selling the treated water to textile mills and large industries there. Not only that, it has made it accessible to the common man.
If someone needs water to build a house or for any other need, they just call and a tanker is sent. It charges only Rs. 75 for each tanker. In this way, Surat is selling about 350 megaliters of water daily through three huge treatment plants in the city.
This scheme, which was started four years ago, is already yielding good results. The municipal corporation is earning an annual income of Rs. 140 crore from sewage. This is a record that no other city in the country has. (Maxim News)
