Hyderabad, July 25: West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Saturday alleged that anti social elements from several Kolkata localities infiltrated the NEET protest and were responsible for attacking police personnel and journalists during Friday’s rally.
Addressing the State Assembly on the final day of the extended Budget Session, Adhikari said the rally, organised by the youth and student wings of Left parties over the alleged NEET examination paper leak, included individuals who were not students and had no connection with the examination.
He claimed that many of those involved came from Rajabazar, Kidderpore, Park Circus, Garden Reach, Ekbalpur and New Town. According to him, these individuals threw water bottles and shoes at police personnel near Dorina Crossing and also assaulted media representatives.
The Chief Minister said the police had received clear instructions not to use force against peaceful and democratic protests. However, he alleged that the violence was intended to provoke police action, including baton charges and the use of tear gas, to escalate tensions.
Adhikari also named several alleged anti social elements in the Assembly, claiming they played a leading role in the violence. He said their objective was to create unrest and attract public attention.
He further alleged that several journalists were attacked during the clashes. According to the Chief Minister, six journalists sustained serious injuries.
Adhikari said seven cases related to the incident would be investigated under the West Bengal Public Safety and Control of Anti Social Activities Act, 2026, which contains stricter provisions against anti social activities.
Meanwhile, police registered another FIR in connection with the violence, taking the total number of FIRs to seven. Authorities have also identified 70 individuals through CCTV footage and video recordings for their alleged involvement in the unrest.
