Hyderabad, Sept. 14 (Maxim News) : Former Telangana Congress in-charge Manikrao Thakre made an unexpected appearance at a Ganesh puja programme held at Gandhi Bhavan on Sunday, triggering speculation about a possible change in the party’s state in-charge.
His visit comes amid reports that the Congress high command may replace Telangana Congress in-charge Meenakshi Natarajan. Party circles are also discussing reports that Natarajan could travel abroad for around 10 months for higher studies.
The developments have led to speculation that the All India Congress Committee (AICC) could appoint a new in-charge to oversee the party’s affairs in Telangana during her absence.
Meenakshi Natarajan change fuels Congress speculation
Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president Mahesh Kumar Goud also responded to the reports concerning Natarajan’s possible change. Speaking to the media on Sunday, he said it was understood that Natarajan may travel abroad for higher studies.
However, Goud said he was not aware of what decision the AICC would take on the matter.
Meenakshi Natarajan took charge as Telangana Congress in-charge on February 14, 2025. Before her, Manikrao Thakre handled the party’s affairs in the state.
After the Congress came to power in Telangana, the AICC appointed Deepa Dasmunsi in place of Thakre. Natarajan was later given responsibility for Telangana after Dasmunsi.
With speculation growing over Natarajan’s possible overseas stay, discussions have started over who could take charge of Telangana Congress affairs.
The names of Mukul Wasnik, Digvijaya Singh, Shaktisinh Gohil and Ashok Gehlot are reportedly being discussed. Thakre’s presence at the Gandhi Bhavan puja programme has also triggered speculation over whether the AICC could consider bringing him back as Telangana Congress in-charge.
Key timing for Telangana Congress
A possible change in the state in-charge would come at a crucial time for the Telangana Congress. Differences among party leaders have already become visible in the state.
At the same time, local body elections are due in Telangana. The party will also face the Assembly elections in about two years.
Against this backdrop, the AICC’s decision on who will coordinate the party’s affairs and bring its leaders together is expected to draw close attention.
