The hearing comes after Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar cleared several MLAs accused of switching parties.

The Speaker ruled that meeting the Chief Minister does not amount to defection. He said there was no firm proof of party change.

Now, the Supreme Court will decide whether to uphold this view or order a full inquiry.

Telangana MLA defection case reaches critical stage

If the court supports the Speaker, the MLAs will retain their membership. However, an adverse ruling may create problems for the Congress government. It could also revive disqualification proceedings.

Complaints were filed against ten MLAs. The Speaker earlier cleared Arikepudi Gandhi, Gudem Mahipal Reddy, Bandla Krishna Mohan, Prakash Goud, and Tellam Venkata Rao.

He later gave clean chits to Pocharam Srinivas Reddy and Kale Yadaiah.

The Speaker has not yet ruled on cases involving Danam Nagender and Kadiyam Srihari. The inquiry against Jagtial MLA Sanjay has concluded, and the verdict is awaited.

The Supreme Court had fixed a deadline for the Speaker’s decisions. That deadline has expired. The court had warned it may intervene if delays continued.

The Speaker issued fresh decisions just a day before the hearing. The BRS has opposed these moves strongly. As a result, the Supreme Court decision on the Telangana MLA defection case is politically significant.
