- Telangana Municipal Elections notification sets ward and chairperson reservations
- Telangana Municipal Elections reservation rules follow commission report
The Telangana government has issued a key notification linked to the conduct of Telangana Municipal Elections, finalising reservations for wards, chairperson posts and mayor positions. The decision covers 121 municipalities and 10 municipal corporations across the state. The government stated that the reservation process follows constitutional guidelines and does not cross the 50 percent cap.
According to the notification, the government has announced detailed guidelines for allotting seats to SC, ST, BC, women and unreserved categories. These reservations are based on the report submitted by the Dedicated Commission. Officials clarified that population data was used to decide the category wise allocation. A preliminary list has already been prepared, clearly mentioning the number of seats reserved for each category in municipalities.
Under the Telangana Municipal Elections framework, the preliminary allocation shows that chairperson posts have been divided as follows. General category has 30 seats, while General women have 31 seats. Scheduled Tribes have three General seats and two women seats. Scheduled Castes have nine General seats and eight women seats. Backward Classes have 19 General seats and 19 women seats. The Municipal Administration Department has taken a preliminary decision on this allocation. However, clarity on the final list is expected within three days.
Meanwhile, the government said it followed several specific guidelines while finalising reservations. SC and ST seats were allocated based on population figures. Women received 50 percent of the total seats, and their reservation was finalised through a lottery system. BC reservations were implemented as per the Dedicated Commission recommendations. Seats were finalised using the latest census data, while BC reservations relied on Survey 2024 data. Wards reserved in the last elections were exempted this time.
In addition, allocation of SC and ST seats to wards in municipalities followed the 2011 census. BC reservations were decided as per the Special Commission report. Women seats under the General category were allotted under the 2019 TM Act. The total number of wards in each municipality was also finalised. These guidelines apply to all municipalities except Greater. District wise reservation tables have also been considered.
Overall, out of 121 municipalities, 61 seats fall under the General category, 38 under BC, 17 under SC and five under ST. Nearly 50 percent of the seats have gone to women, highlighting a focus on women empowerment. Meanwhile, officials said the notification for Telangana Municipal Elections is likely to be issued on the 17th of this month. The final announcement on category wise allocation through lottery or roster will also come on the same day. Political activity has already intensified as candidates prepare for the polls.
