Telangana Speaker Seeks Time on MLA Disqualification Hearings
Telangana Speaker | Hyderabad, Oct. 31: The Telangana Legislative Assembly Secretary has sought an additional two months from the Supreme Court to complete hearings on the disqualification petitions filed against ten MLAs who defected from the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) to the ruling Congress.
The Supreme Court had earlier directed the Speaker to decide on the disqualification cases within three months from its July 31 order.
The court had also ruled that delays in such cases undermine democratic values, stating that the “Operation successful, patient dead” approach should not apply to defection matters.
According to the Assembly Secretariat, notices were issued to all ten MLAs, but only eight have responded so far.

Hearings have been completed for four of them, while proceedings for the remaining six are pending. The Speaker’s counsel informed the court that additional time is needed to conclude the process.
In its previous observations, the Supreme Court had expressed concern that prolonged delays in deciding disqualification pleas benefit defectors and violate constitutional principles.
The Speaker’s request for an extension comes as political observers note growing public interest in the outcome, which could determine the future of the MLAs who switched allegiance from BRS to Congress. The court’s decision on the time extension is expected soon.
