Tensions in Municipal Elections Disrupt Polling

  • Clashes and sloganeering during municipal elections in Telangana districts

Hyderabad: Polling for the municipal elections in Telangana began at 7 am on Wednesday and will continue till 5 pm. However, tensions in municipal elections surfaced in several districts during the voting process. Clashes, sloganeering and attempts at vote rigging were reported from Mahabubabad, Nizamabad, Medak and Sangareddy. Police intervened quickly and brought the situation under control.

In Mahabubabad town, minor clashes took place at polling booths 32 and 33. A scuffle broke out between workers of the Congress and BRS candidates contesting in Ward 14. Both sides accused each other and tensions escalated. There were allegations that BRS workers attacked Congress workers. Therefore, a large police force rushed to the spot and dispersed both groups. Officials deployed heavy police in Ward 14 and took strict security measures. They later said polling is currently going on peacefully.

Meanwhile, Nizamabad district recorded 14 percent polling till 9 am on Wednesday. Minor tension prevailed in Kotagally 25th division, where BJP and Congress leaders shouted slogans against each other. Police noticed the situation and immediately dispersed both groups. They acted swiftly to prevent major incidents. In Bodhan town, MIM and BRS activists also raised slogans, which created a tense atmosphere. However, police intervened and restored order.

An attempt at fake voting came to light at the Rakasipet polling station in Nizamabad district. Two people allegedly tried to cast fake votes. The polling staff stopped them and registered a case. Officials said action is being taken for violation of the election code of conduct.

Similarly, minor tension broke out in Ward 15 of Narsapur Municipality in Medak district. BJP and BRS workers argued over allegations of luring voters. A scuffle followed, but police reached the spot and dispersed both factions. Officials confirmed the situation is under control.

In Sangareddy district, a person tried to cast a fake vote at the 28th ward polling station. The person had already voted at another polling station. After candidates objected, polling officials acted immediately. They marked the person’s finger with ink and sent him out. Election officials said further legal action will be taken.

Despite isolated incidents, authorities continued polling under tight security across Telangana.
