Hyderabad, May 15: Panic gripped residents of Chakrayapalem village in Thorrur after unidentified thieves allegedly stole gold ornaments from women sleeping outside their houses during the early hours of Friday.
According to villagers, the accused targeted multiple houses and escaped with nearly eight tolas of gold ornaments.
Police said two unidentified persons wearing black clothes, masks and gloves entered the village around 12.30 am.
The gang first attempted to enter the house of a resident identified as Lingamurthy.
However, dogs barked loudly and alerted the family. Lingamurthy woke up and raised an alarm after noticing suspicious movement near the house. The accused immediately fled towards nearby agricultural fields.
Later, around 1 am, the thieves allegedly reached the house of Velikatte Jamuna and attempted to snatch a four tola gold chain from her neck while she was sleeping outside the house.
Police said Jamuna resisted the theft, leading to a brief struggle with the accused.
During the incident, the chain reportedly broke into two pieces, with one part remaining with the victim while the thieves escaped with the other portion.
Nearly 30 minutes later, the accused allegedly targeted another house in the village.
Victim Konda Parvathamma and her husband Lingaiah were sleeping on separate beds outside their residence when the thieves allegedly used cutting pliers to cut and steal a three and a half tola necklace and a three tola black bead chain from Parvathamma’s neck.
After hearing her screams, Lingaiah chased the accused, but they managed to escape in the darkness.
Following information, Thorrur Circle Inspector Ganesh and Sub Inspector Gollamudi Upender visited the village and collected details from the victims and local residents.
Police registered a case and launched an investigation. Officials said efforts are underway to identify the accused and examine possible CCTV footage from nearby areas.
The incident created fear among villagers, especially residents who sleep outside their homes during the summer season due to high temperatures.
