Tollywood Legend Kota Srinivasa Rao Passes Away at 82
Hyderabad, July 13, 2025: The Indian film industry is mourning the loss of veteran actor and Padma Shri awardee Kota Srinivasa Rao, who passed away this Sunday morning at the age of 82 after prolonged health complications. A towering figure in Telugu cinema, Kota’s career spanned over four decades, leaving behind a monumental legacy of over 750 films across multiple languages.
A Humble Beginning to an Iconic Career
Born on July 10, 1942, in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh, Kota Srinivasa Rao initially aspired to become a doctor, inspired by his father, Seeta Ramanjaneyulu. He later took a detour into the world of banking, working at the State Bank, before his true passion led him to the stage and eventually to the silver screen.
He made his film debut with the Telugu film ‘Pranam Khareedu’ in 1978, marking the beginning of a prolific acting journey. His final Telugu film appearance was in ‘Suvarna Sundari’.
Versatility Across Languages and Genres
Kota Srinivasa Rao was celebrated for his unmatched versatility, playing everything from cunning villains to endearing fathers and comic characters with equal ease. His adaptability allowed him to shine in Tamil, Kannada, and Hindi cinema as well.
- In Tamil, he debuted with ‘Saami’ (2003) and was last seen in ‘Kaththadi’ (2018).
- His Bollywood journey began with ‘Pratighaat’ (1987) and concluded with ‘Baaghi’ (2016).
- In Kannada cinema, his first film was ‘Lady Commissioner’ (1997), with ‘Kabzaa’ (2023) being his final appearance.
Beyond acting, he was also a dubbing artist and occasional playback singer, showcasing his artistic depth.
Honours, Awards, and Public Service
Kota’s contribution to Indian cinema was recognized with 9 Nandi Awards, a SIIMA Award, and the Padma Shri in 2015, one of India’s highest civilian honors.
Not just confined to cinema, he also served the public as a BJP MLA from Vijayawada East in 1999, demonstrating his commitment to social service.

TPCC President and MLC Mahesh Kumar Goud expressed his deep sorrow at the veteran actor’s passing, saying:
“It is heartbreaking to hear that Padma Shri Kota Srinivasa Rao is no more. He carved a unique place in Indian cinema with his exceptional acting talent. Apart from being an outstanding actor, his contributions in public service are also commendable. His demise is an irreparable loss to the Telugu film industry.”
