He made these remarks during a meeting with American rice farmers at the White House on Monday. The farmers raised concerns while discussing the recently announced 12 billion dollar farmer aid package. They said India, Thailand and China were dumping rice in the American market at very low prices because of heavy subsidies. They also said American farmers were unable to compete.

Trump responded to these complaints with sharp comments. He asked officials why the United States was allowing India to dump rice in this manner. He then said that if their products entered the US market, the US should also enter their markets.

However, he added that if that was not possible, the US would impose additional tariffs on Indian rice. He made it clear that the US would block such dumping in the future.

Meanwhile, Indian basmati rice continues to see strong demand in the United States. During 2024–25, India exported nearly 4.5 lakh tonnes of basmati rice to the American market.

At present, the tariff on basmati rice ranges from zero to 2.4 percent. However, farmers argued that prices of non basmati varieties from India were far lower than those from other Asian countries. They said this difference was causing losses for American rice growers.

The development has drawn attention because India and the United States are preparing for bilateral trade discussions. The tariff issue has therefore become more important.

Observers say these remarks may influence upcoming talks. The farmers’ complaints also highlight wider market concerns as cheaper imports continue to pressure domestic producers.

Therefore, Trump’s comments have added a new angle to the ongoing trade debate between the two countries.

The situation may evolve further as both sides prepare for formal discussions. However, Trump’s words have already sparked fresh interest in the future of rice trade between India and the United States.
