Hyderabad, August 7: Agriculture and Handlooms Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao said the welfare of handloom workers remains a priority for the Telangana government. Addressing the National Handloom Day celebrations on Thursday, he urged people to purchase handloom products and support weavers across the state.
The minister inaugurated the celebrations at People’s Plaza, where more than 100 handloom stalls have been set up.
Government Expands Handloom Welfare Measures
Tummala said the handloom exhibition will continue from August 7 to August 16 and that recipients of the Konda Laxman Bapuji Handloom Award will be honoured during the event.
He described handloom as a symbol of India’s cultural heritage and noted that the weaving traditions of Gadwal, Pochampally and Narayanpet have earned global recognition.
The minister said Telangana ranks first in the geo tagging of handloom workers and is providing modern skill training to young weavers through the Indian Institute of Handloom Technology (IIHT).
Highlighting welfare initiatives, Tummala said eligible weavers receive Rs 18,000 annually under the Netanna Bharosa scheme, while the Netannaku Bharosa insurance scheme provides Rs 5 lakh in coverage.
He also said the government has released Rs 49.27 crore towards loan waiver for handloom weavers and allocated Rs 980 crore for the development of the handloom sector.
According to the minister, 3,096 metric tonnes of yarn are being supplied through the Vemulawada Yarn Depot, and pending elections to handloom cooperative societies will be conducted soon.
Tummala said the Congress government is committed to giving equal priority to both farmers and handloom workers.
