Hyderabad: Two women construction workers were killed while four labourers were injured after an under construction cellar in Madhapur area caved in the morning on Monday.
The bodies of the two women labourers were retrieved and identified as Bharatamma and Kistamma.
Balraju, Papaiah, Hanumantha and Shantamma were injured in the incident, have been shifted to the nearby hospital for trearment.
Teams from GHMC, Police and Fire Services are engaged in rescue and relief measures at the accident spot, with Mayor Bonthu Rammohan and Commissioner, B. Janardhan Reddy supervising the proceedings.
While the body of Bharatamma was retrieved and sent for autopsy, relatives of Kistamma refused to take the body alleging that the building owner did not follow basic safe construction practices. They were demanding compensation from the building owners.
According to persons on the site, the six construction workers had reached the site and started to work on Monday morning. Around 10.15 a.m., the side walls of the cellar, which was being dug up, caved in on the workers, burying them under huge piles of dirt and construction debris.
Mayor announces ex gratia:
Mayor Bonthu Rammohan has announced an ex gratia of Rs.8 lakh each to the two labourers who lost their lives and four others who were injured in the building collapse at Madhapur.
Out of the Rs.8 lakh, the Labour Department will provide Rs.6 lakh to each of the labourers while GHMC will release the remaining sum to the labourers. Meanwhile, the Mayor said criminal cases would be registered against the building owners.
“We will also ensure that the builder releases an ex gratia of at least Rs.10 lakh to the families of the labourers,” the Mayor said.
