Mumbai, June 14: Speculation over possible defections in Shiv Sena UBT has intensified in Maharashtra after reports claimed that some MPs were in contact with Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. In response, party chief Uddhav Thackeray held a key meeting with MPs and senior leaders at Matoshree in Bandra East.
Shiv Sena UBT currently has nine Lok Sabha MPs. However, three MPs stayed away from the meeting, triggering further political discussion.
Shiv Sena UBT dismisses split rumours
MPs Sanjay Haribau Jadhav, Bhausaheb Rajaram Wakchaure and Omprakash Rajenimbalkar did not attend the meeting. Reports in political circles suggested that some UBT MPs were exploring options to shift support to Shinde’s Shiv Sena.
There have also been claims that discussions took place earlier this month regarding a possible realignment. Adding to speculation, Union Minister and Shiv Sena leader Prataprao Jadhav recently stated that “Operation Tiger” was nearing completion and would move ahead whenever a decision was taken.
At present, Shinde’s Shiv Sena has seven MPs in the Lok Sabha and remains among the major NDA allies.
Meanwhile, Shiv Sena UBT rejected reports of an internal split and asserted that the party remains united. Party leader Sanjay Raut said the organisation was preparing for generational leadership and expressed confidence in the role of Aaditya Thackeray.
Raut stated that Aaditya represents the future direction of the party and added that senior leaders would continue supporting the next generation in strengthening the organisation.
