Hamirpur, May 29: Six labourers died and three others suffered injuries after a portion of an under construction bridge collapsed over the Betwa river in Uttar Pradesh’s Hamirpur district early Friday morning.
The incident took place around 3 am between Parsani and Kandaur villages when a slab of the bridge under construction from Maurakandar to Kurara suddenly collapsed following heavy storm conditions.
Officials said several labourers working on the project were sleeping on the upper section of the slab when it gave way unexpectedly.
Rescue operation launched after collapse
Police identified the deceased as Lokendra (22), Kuldeep Nishad (19), Sawant Yadav (28), Sabhajeet (30), Pushpendra Chauhan (34) and Rajesh Pal (42).
Three other labourers were trapped under a bridge pillar during the collapse. Rescue teams later pulled them out from the debris and shifted them to the district hospital in Hamirpur for treatment.
Lalpura police station SHO Rajesh Kumar Saroj said the bodies were sent for postmortem examination.
He added that debris removal operations were continuing to ensure that no other workers remained trapped under the rubble.
Officials said strong winds and storm conditions may have contributed to the collapse, though the exact cause would be confirmed after a detailed investigation.
Local authorities and police teams rushed to the spot immediately after receiving information about the accident and launched rescue operations.
The bridge collapse has once again raised concerns over construction safety measures at infrastructure project sites.
