Moscow, Sept. 22: President Vladimir Putin’s ruling United Russia party won 355 of the 450 seats in Russia’s State Duma, according to near complete election results.
The result gives United Russia a constitutional majority in the lower house of parliament. The party secured about 57.83% of the party list vote, according to Russia’s Central Election Commission.
The three day parliamentary election concluded on Sunday. Central Election Commission chief Ella Pamfilova announced the latest results on Monday.
United Russia’s 355 seats mark an increase from the 343 seats it won in the 2016 parliamentary election. The party also secured a larger share of seats than in the 2021 election.
United Russia Retains Dominant Majority in Duma
Four other parties crossed the threshold to enter the State Duma.
The Communist Party won 40 seats, while the nationalist LDPR secured 25 seats. New People won 20 seats and Just Russia secured four seats, according to the reported results.
The election took place in a tightly controlled political environment. Several opposition figures and parties critical of Russia’s war in Ukraine were excluded from the national ballot. The Yabloko party, the main registered anti-war party, failed to win national representation.
Russia’s Central Election Commission reported turnout of about 59.3% among around 111 million eligible voters. Pamfilova described the election as clean, while opposition activists alleged widespread irregularities.
France separately criticised the election environment, citing restrictions on political opposition, civil society and independent media. It also objected to voting conducted in Ukrainian territories occupied and claimed by Russia.
The election was the first Russian parliamentary vote since the country launched its full scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The Kremlin had presented the election as a demonstration of national unity and support for its policies.
