Hyderabad, Sept. 22: Farmers protesting for irrigation water from the Jurala Project have received an assurance that water will be released into the Left Canal on Tuesday afternoon.
The assurance came after former Makthal MLA Chittem Rammohan Reddy spoke to the project’s Chief Engineer following a farmers’ protest on Monday.
Farmers from Amarachinta and Atmakur mandals have been demanding water to protect their standing crops under the Jurala ayacut.
The protests intensified over the past few days after irrigation water was stopped. Farmers had also released water into the Left Canal themselves on Saturday, but officials later closed the regulator.
Jurala Farmers Seek Water for Standing Crops
Rammohan Reddy joined farmers in a dharna on Monday and urged the government to release water.
He later spoke to the project CE and explained the difficulties faced by farmers in the ayacut areas.
According to Rammohan Reddy, the CE assured him that the matter would be discussed with senior officials and that water would be released into the Left Canal on Tuesday afternoon.
The assurance follows several days of protests at the Jurala Project. Police had stopped BRS leaders and farmers from reaching the project on Monday, while Rammohan Reddy was taken into custody during the protest.
Rammohan Reddy described the proposed water release as a victory for the farmers.
He also thanked the farmers and others who participated in the dharna.
The dispute comes as farmers seek irrigation support for crops in the Jurala ayacut. Officials have cited water availability and operational concerns, while farmers have continued to demand releases to protect their crops.
