UP Govt Ends Special Shield for Madrasa Teachers, Police Can Act Directly

Lucknow/Hyderabad, Dec 23 (Maxim News): In a major policy shift, the Yogi Adityanath-led government in Uttar Pradesh has repealed a law that earlier protected madrasa teachers and staff from direct police action. The law was introduced in 2016 during the Samajwadi Party government headed by former Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav.

Under the earlier provision, police were barred from taking immediate action against madrasa teachers or employees, even if allegations of financial irregularities or other offences surfaced. Investigations required special permissions, effectively granting a legal shield to madrasa staff.

Changes After the Repeal

With the repeal now in force, law enforcement agencies can directly register cases, investigate complaints, and take action against madrasa teachers or staff wherever evidence or credible allegations exist. The government says this will ensure faster and more effective action.

Justifying the decision, the Yogi government reiterated its principle of “Kan se upar koi varg nahi”no one is above the law. Officials believe that special protections weaken accountability and create loopholes in governance.

According to the state government, the move is expected to improve transparency in the functioning of madrasas and help curb financial and administrative irregularities in the madrasa education system.

Assurance to Honest Teachers

The government has stressed that honest and law-abiding teachers have nothing to fear, and that the repeal is intended to target only wrongdoing while ensuring fairness and uniform application of the law.

The decision has drawn attention across political and educational circles, as it ends a nearly decade-old provision that shielded madrasa staff from direct police action, marking a clear shift in Uttar Pradesh’s governance approach. (Maxim News)
