Hyderabad, May 6: The Vijay Government move in Tamil Nadu gained momentum after the Congress extended conditional support to actor turned politician Vijay. However, the party placed a key condition before backing the new administration.
Vijay led Tamilaga Vetri Kalagam emerged as the single largest party with 108 seats. Therefore, it fell short of the majority mark of 118. Soon after, Congress decided to support Vijay with its five MLAs. As a result, the tally rose to 113.
However, Congress made it clear that parties it termed as religious forces must stay out of the alliance. In return, it sought two cabinet posts and a significant role in governance. Meanwhile, party leaders said they aim to ensure a secular and progressive government.
Congress Condition Shapes Vijay Government Talks
The Congress political affairs committee met late at night and approved the decision. Moreover, it also agreed to work with Vijay in future local body and parliamentary elections. This move marks a sharp shift in Tamil Nadu politics.
On the other hand, the DMK strongly reacted to this development. Party leaders criticized Congress and termed the move as political betrayal. Consequently, tensions have increased within existing alliances in the state.
Vijay now continues efforts to secure full majority support. He is in talks with other parties including CPI, CPM, and VCK. If these parties extend support, the Vijay Government may comfortably cross the majority mark.
Sources indicate that Vijay may meet the Governor soon with letters of support. If the numbers fall in place, he is likely to take oath as Chief Minister on May 7.
This political shift signals a major change in Tamil Nadu. For decades, Dravidian parties dominated the state. However, the rise of Vijay Government marks a new phase in regional politics.
