Waqf Bill Before Rajya Sabha: MPs Take Up Discussion
Delhi/Hyderabad, April 3 (Maxim News): The controversial Waqf (Amendment) Bill, which was passed in the Lok Sabha after a long debate, has now come up for discussion in the Rajya Sabha. Union Minister Kiren Rijiju introduced the Waqf Amendment Bill in the Upper House (Rajya Sabha) on thursday. Later, a discussion was started on it.
The bill was debated in the Lok Sabha for more than 14 hours on Wednesday. The House was heated with opposition allegations and ruling party counters. After that, the voting process was conducted.
288 members voted in favor of the bill and 232 against it. The opposition’s objections were defeated by a margin of 58 votes. 8 hours have been allotted for the debate in the Rajya Sabha as well. The time will be extended if necessary.
The vote will be taken later. Since the ruling NDA has a slight lead in the upper house as well, there are opinions that the bill’s passage is a formality. After being approved by both houses, it will become a law with the President’s signature.
The Centre has brought this new bill to make women’s participation in governance mandatory by increasing transparency and accountability in the Waqf governing bodies.
For this, about 40 amendments will be made in the Waqf Act of 1995. Government sources said that these changes are being made on the basis of demands coming from the Muslim community.
The Centre introduced this bill in the Lok Sabha in August last year. At that time, due to heavy opposition from the opposition, it was sent to the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for scrutiny. The committee approved the bill with several proposals. (Maxim News)
