Waqf CEO Row: HC Pulls Up Govt, Asadullah Appointed CEO
- Court directs Chief Secretary as government names Mohammad Asadullah as FAC CEO
- Waqf Board Chairperson Syed Azmathullah Hussaini seen focusing on politics over operations
Waqf CEO | Hyderabad, October 29: The Telangana High Court has firmly directed the state government to act on the continued vacancy in the Waqf Board’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) position, citing persistent delays in property matters and Board non-functioning.
Justice Anil Kumar Jukanti passed the order while hearing writ petitions nos. 276,9793,9795, 15566, I5569, 15572,15576, 15609, 15698, 15895, 15935, 16087, 16223,16660, 17204,17224 and 17451 of 2021 that challenged refusals of property registration involving Waqf-linked lands.
The Court observed that the absence of a full-time CEO had resulted in frequent adjournments and hindered progress in several property-related disputes.

“Waqf Board is an important institution. The Chair of CEO, being vacant for long, is causing unwanted delays in matters pending before the High Court.
Such a situation cannot be continued for long,” Justice Jukanti stated, underscoring the need for immediate steps—even if through temporary appointments—to ensure effective court communications and timely resolution of cases.
The government responded to the High Court’s concerns by appointing Mohammad Asadullah as FAC (Full Additional Charge) CEO to the Waqf Board.
However, the Court criticized the earlier government memorandum of September 26, 2025, authorizing an officer merely to sign cheques and court vakalats, calling it “a mere eye wash.”
Amidst these developments, sources within the community have noted that Telangana Waqf Board Chairperson Syed Azmathullah Hussaini appears to be spending more time on political activities than managing the Board’s operational affairs.
This has fueled concerns over governance and operational oversight at a time when the Board faces acute administrative challenges.
To clarify the legal aspects surrounding temporary appointments, Senior Advocate A. Venkatesh has continued as amicus curiae for guidance.
The Waqf Board’s efficiency and prompt administrative measures are now under greater scrutiny, with the High Court and state government focusing on restoring regular operations and clearing backlogs.
After assuming charge, CEO Mohd. Asadullah is actively driving waqf board to the progress and the Telangana Waqf Board has uploaded details of 850+ Waqf institutions on UMEED portal, striving to become a leader in data transparency and digital management .
