The poisoning of dogs in Telangana has triggered serious concern after more than 600 stray dogs died in a single incident in Kamareddy district. Animal protection organisations expressed strong anger. They alleged large scale cruelty and serious violations of norms meant to control stray dog populations.

According to details available, the poisoning of dogs took place in the villages of Bhawanipet, Faridpet, Wadi, Palvancha and Bandarameshwar Palli in Machareddy mandal. The number of stray dogs had increased in these villages over the past few days. As a result, villagers reported frequent attacks and injuries. When the issue reached the sarpanches, they responded. However, instead of following scientific methods, they allegedly decided to kill the dogs in large numbers by poisoning them. Consequently, up to 600 dogs died in one operation.

Meanwhile, the incident reached animal welfare groups through word of mouth. Representatives of the Stray Animal Foundation conducted a detailed inquiry. They confirmed that the dogs were killed. They later submitted a complaint to the Machareddy police with supporting evidence. The organisation alleged that the act was carried out with the support of panchayat authorities. Following this, police registered cases against the sarpanches of the five villages named in the complaint.

Later, based on information that the poisoned dogs were buried on the outskirts of the villages, police and veterinary officials stepped in. They unearthed the remains. Then they conducted post mortem examinations to verify the cause of death. The investigation is continuing.

On the other hand, similar allegations surfaced from Hanamkonda district. In Shayampet and Arepalli villages, about 300 stray dogs were allegedly killed over three days, from January 6 to January 8. The dogs were reportedly killed using poisoned needles.

After a complaint by Gautam, a representative of the Stray Animal Foundation of India, police registered cases against nine people. These include the sarpanches of two villages, their husbands, the deputy sarpanch, two gram panchayat secretaries, and labourers. Police also stated in the FIR that labourers were specially hired to carry out the killings, which has sparked fresh debate.
