- Warangal Fort lands face illegal structures, says Union Minister
Hyderabad: Union Minister Kishan Reddy has written a letter to Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, seeking immediate action against illegal structures on Warangal Fort lands. In the letter, he stressed that the lands of Warangal Fort should be clearly recognised as belonging to the Archaeological Survey of India. He also directed that illegal constructions on the fort lands should be removed without delay.
In his communication, Kishan Reddy raised concerns over encroachments on the historic site. He stated that some locals had occupied parts of the fort area and built illegal structures. He clearly said that occupying Warangal Fort lands and raising constructions there is illegal, as the monument is under the control of the Archaeological Survey of India. Therefore, he urged the state government to act firmly and protect the heritage site.
Kishan Reddy also referred to the historical importance of Warangal, also known as Orugallu. He said the town was the capital of the Kakatiyas for nearly 250 years and is known for its rich history and cultural splendour. He added that Warangal continues to flourish as a symbol of Telangana’s heritage. He explained that during the Kakatiya period, Warangal Fort was built with seven ramparts to protect the capital from invasions by other kingdoms.
He further noted that the fort withstood attacks by the Delhi Sultans and the Hyderabad Nawabs. According to him, the structure still stands as a symbol of the bravery of the Kakatiyas. He also said that thousands of tourists visit Warangal Fort every day to learn about its sculpture, architectural skills, hundreds of temples, and the historical importance of the fort.
Meanwhile, Kishan Reddy said the Central Government has recently installed a sound and illumination lighting system at the fort to attract more tourists. He clarified that the Central Government is continuously taking steps for the conservation and restoration of Warangal Fort under the supervision of the Archaeological Survey of India. However, he pointed out that only three of the original seven ramparts remain today.
He revealed that encroachments exist on these remaining ramparts and other fort lands. He mentioned that ASI officials have issued notices to encroachers several times, asking them to vacate immediately. He also recalled that ASI officials wrote letters to the Warangal District Collector on 04.11.2022 and again on 01.12.2025. He questioned why no steps were taken despite these letters. Finally, Kishan Reddy ordered that illegal structures on Warangal Fort lands should be removed at once.
