WATCH | Black Out In Hyderabad Against Waqf Act

Hyderabad: All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) Chief Asaduddin Owaisi, along with numerous residents and business owners in Hyderabad, participated in a nationwide silent protest against the Waqf Amendment Act by switching off their lights for 15 minutes on Tuesday night.

The symbolic “lights out” protest, held between 9:00 and 9:15 PM on April 30, was part of a pan-India campaign launched by the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB). The peaceful demonstration received overwhelming support from communities across various states, including Delhi, Maharashtra, Bihar, and Telangana.

The AIMPLB has been voicing strong opposition to the proposed amendments, warning that the changes could strip the Muslim community of its control over thousands of Waqf properties—ranging from mosques and dargahs to charitable institutions and prime land parcels.

Speaking about the campaign, AIMPLB spokesperson SQR Ilyas said, “This may appear to be a symbolic act, but it is a powerful expression of resistance by Indian Muslims and all those who believe in justice. We are united in opposing these dark amendments that threaten our religious and community assets.”

In Hyderabad, visuals from localities including Charminar and Mehdipatnam showed homes and businesses going dark in solidarity. Community leaders and civil society groups also organized awareness events and meetings to educate people about the implications of the Waqf Amendment Act.

The AIMPLB had briefly suspended its campaign from April 23 to April 25 as a mark of respect for the victims of the recent terror attack in Pahalgam. However, it resumed its efforts with renewed resolve after the mourning period.

The board has been organizing a series of public meetings, human chains, and district-level protests across the country to mobilize support against the bill. A major protest meeting was held earlier this month at Darussalam in Hyderabad, drawing large crowds and political leaders.

With increasing public participation, the AIMPLB has called on the central government to withdraw the proposed amendments and initiate a broader consultation with community stakeholders.
