Water At Ground Level: Reservoirs In Dead Storage

Hyderabad, April 8 (Maxim News):  The state’s reservoirs are asking for water.  The storage in the major reservoirs of the Krishna and Godavari basins has also fallen to dead storage levels.  This is the first time since 2015-16 that there has been such a water crisis in Telangana.

The Srisailam and Nagarjunasagar reservoirs did not receive a sufficient flood in the water year 2023-24 (water year – June to May) due to a lack of rain in the Krishna River basin in the upper states.  Initially, the state received 5 percent more rainfall than normal, but after October, there was no trace of rain.

Compared to the normal rainfall between October and March last year, 56.7 percent deficit rainfall was recorded.  Due to this, new water is not entering the reservoirs, the existing water reserves are depleting rapidly.  At present 14 major reservoirs in Krishna and Godavari basins have reached dead storage.  Due to this, the drinking water in May and June is also in dire straits.  If the rains start late in June, the situation will become more alarming, officials say.

After seven years in the current water year, Krishna basin projects got the lowest inflow.  It is estimated that the Srisailam reservoir receives an average of 1,000 to 2,000 TMC of flood annually.  But in 2015-16 it reached the lowest 71 tmc.  Then again in 2023-24, only 144.36 TMCs of flood occurred.  While Nagarjunasagar usually received 1,000 to 2,000 TMCs in 2015-16 only 72 TMCs were received.

The minimum storage level required for irrigation needs in the Srisailam reservoir was 854 feet.  It has already fallen to 810 feet.  Stocks fell to 34.29 TMC.  The minimum storage level of Nagarjunasagar was 510 feet and is currently at 511.5 feet.  Stocks have reduced to 134.23 TMC.  But the water that can be used in this is very little.  The minimum level of the Jurala project is 1033 feet.  It has already fallen to 1011.27 feet.

with inflows to projects in the Godavari river basin falling significantly this year.  This is the first time after three years that there has been such a low flood.  The crucial Sriram Sagar project received only 203.73 TMCs of flood in 2023-24.  This is the first time since 2019-20 that there has been such a low flood.  593 TMCs in 2022-23, 678 TMCs in 2021-22 and 368 TMCs in 2020-21.  The Yellampalli project also received the lowest flood of 396 TMC this time after 2019-20.

At present there is only 7.53 TMC of reserves in the reservoir.  It is noteworthy that this project, which has a maximum water storage capacity of 20.1 TMC, had 12.26 TMC of water at the same time last year.  and this year the Mid Manair project received only 45 TMC of flood. Lower Manair also recorded the lowest inflow after 2019-20 at 78 tmc this year, it is worth noting.

It is said that hundreds of TMCs of water have flowed into major projects on the Godavari.  Then the gates of the projects were raised and all the water went down.  Later there was no rain or inflow.  The situation came when asking for projects.

Water is also flowing in Manjira Reservoir in Sangareddy district.  Drinking water is supplied to the twin cities of Hyderabad from Manjeera.  If this is the case in the first week of April, there is concern about the water supply situation in May.  (Maxim News)
