Hyderabad, August 18: An 11th century Telugu Kannada inscription has been discovered at the Lakshmi Narayana Swamy temple in Dundigal, Medchal district.
The inscription was found on a broken stone pillar brought from near a small tank in the village.
The 41 line inscription is written in 11th century Telugu Kannada script and Kannada language.
Inscription Reveals Jain Heritage
The inscription carries carvings of the Moon, Sun, a Jain Tirthankara, a cow and a calf.
According to historian Sriramoju Haragopal, the inscription dates to the reign of Kalyani Chalukya emperor Tribhuvanamalla Deva, also known as Vikramaditya VI.
He ruled from AD 1076 to 1126. The inscription records a donation made while the king was camping at Kalyanapura Nelavidu.
The inscription mentions Mahamandalesvara Deven of the Soma lineage. However, the stone is broken where his full name appears.
It also records the construction of a Jain basadi dedicated to a Jain Sasanadevata.
Several units of land were donated by the Mandalesvara for the religious establishment.
Haragopal deciphered the inscription after it was sent for study by Narsagari Jagan.
The discovery adds to evidence of Jain religious and cultural activity in the region during the Kalyani Chalukya period.
