Minor Damages Reported

Preliminary reports indicate that at least 15 houses and two school buildings were damaged, although officials are still assessing the full extent of property loss. Emergency teams have been deployed to survey damage and assist affected families.

Earthquake History in the Region

The Tanimbar Islands, a cluster of around 30 islands in Indonesia’s Maluku province, lie in the seismically active “Ring of Fire”, making them highly prone to earthquakes. In January 2023, the region experienced a devastating 7.6 magnitude quake, causing widespread destruction. Monday’s earthquake is considered the strongest since that incident.

Situated between Timor to the west and New Guinea to the east, the region remains on alert due to its geological vulnerability.
