Hyderabad Rains: 54 waterlogging points identified

With the onset of southwest monsoon in Kerala, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Thursday announced full preparedness to tackle the rains that are set to arrive here in a week.

The director of GHMC’s Enforcement, Vigilance, and Disaster Management (EV&DM) wing N Prakash Reddy said the Disaster Response Force (DRF) has been equipped with 27 emergency teams and 450 personnel to handle any situation arising out of incessant rains.

In addition to this, three teams comprising 50 personnel have undergone training with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) recently. With these three teams, EV&DM will have one team of DRF in each of the GHMC circles. As many as 18 to 20 personnel will work in three shifts to make the service available round-the-clock. Ahead of monsoon, a total of 54 water logging points have been identified in the city.

Reddy said that strategic locations are identified and DRF teams will be stationed here to cover vulnerable inundation and water stagnation points. Each of these teams deployed in each GHMC circle will have five to six trained personnel available with all necessary safety equipment, rescue tools, dewatering pumps, and motors.

Nineteen trucks, eight vans, eight inflatable boats, two earth movers, two boat engines, 89 dewatering pumps, and 30 generators are at the disposal of these teams. He said advanced life support ambulances are also being kept at different locations as a standby. This year, GHMC has decided to provide wireless communication sets to ground officers for seamless communication.

In events of tree fall, 10 green waste teams have been deployed to clear them without delay. The EV&DM has opened phone numbers 040-29555500 or 9000113667 to report any monsoon-related emergency.
