Congress Meeting On UCC At Sonia Gandhi’s Residence On July 3
Delhi/Hyderabad, July 1 (Maxim News): The Congress Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Uniform Civil Code – (UCC) will be meeting at 10 Janpath, the residence of former AICC President Sonia Gandhi. In this meeting, it will be discussed o the issue of what kind of stance the party should take in the discussion on UCC will be discussed.
The meeting was called by the Parliamentary Standing Committee (Personnel, Public Grievances, Law and Justice) on July 3. The Standing Committee will discuss the UCC with all relevant stakeholders.
It may be recalled that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has recently raised a debate on UCC. He questioned how the country could survive with two separate laws. Modi criticized that the Constitution of India talks about equal rights and the Supreme Court also says that the UCC should be implemented, but these people (the opposition) are doing vote bank politics. With the announcement of the Prime Minister, there is a nationwide debate on the issue of UCC. The Opposition criticized the Prime Minister for raising the issue of UCC to gain benefits in the upcoming elections. It is accused of trying to mislead people about the main issues like inflation, unemployment, and the situation in Manipur. Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel commented that the implementation of UCC will have a severe impact on tribal culture and traditions. Why focus only on Hindu-Muslim dynamics? They also want to consider the tribal population of their state. Kerala Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala has criticized that the BUP has deliberately raised the UCC debate to split the society into two from the perspective of religion.
Meanwhile, the BJP has announced in its manifesto for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections that it will implement the UCC if it comes to power. (Maxim News)
