Hyderabad, July 5: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for several districts in Telangana, forecasting moderate rainfall in Hyderabad and a few other districts over the next two days.
The weather department said widespread rainfall is unlikely across the State at present. It added that rainfall activity is expected to weaken further after two days, with a temporary break in showers likely in many areas.
The IMD said the southwest monsoon may not remain as favourable as earlier expected. It attributed the outlook to the gradual strengthening of El Niño conditions.
According to the department, Telangana could receive below normal rainfall during July and August. Rainfall activity across southern India may decline further by September if El Niño strengthens.
The IMD, however, said low pressure systems could still trigger widespread rainfall in some parts of the State. It added that the season may witness alternating spells of heavy rain followed by dry periods instead of uniform rainfall.
The department recalled thatTelangana recorded nearly 25 percent below normal rainfall in June last year. It said similar conditions cannot be ruled out this year.
Meanwhile, the IMD said it is using artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies to improve the accuracy of weather forecasts. It advised farmers to regularly follow official weather bulletins and plan agricultural activities accordingly.
