New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India is now at its full strength of 34 judges, with the swearing-in of three new judges. Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud administered the oath of office to Justices Satish Chandra Sharma, Augustine George Masih, and Sandeep Mehta at a ceremony in the Supreme Court complex.
The three judges were elevated from the HCs of Delhi, Rajasthan, and Gauhati, respectively. Justice Sharma was the CJ of the Delhi HC, while Justices Masih and Mehta were the CJs of the Rajasthan and Gauhati HCs, respectively.
The Supreme Court collegium had recommended the elevation of the three judges on November 6, and the government had cleared the proposal on X.
In a statement, the SC said that the appointment of the 3 new judges “will help in reducing the pendency of cases and ensuring speedy delivery of justice.”
The statement also said that the new judges have “distinguished track records” and that their appointment will “further strengthen the Supreme Court.”
The appointment of the three new judges has been welcomed by the legal fraternity. Many lawyers have praised the judges’ legal acumen and experience.
